Dear You (you know who you are),
I’m supposed to say something about our time together right? Oh, okay…

*cues dramatic music*

…………..

*drops mic, walks offstage*

Sincerely,
Wilena.

P.S,
No shade, no hate, no “drama” sir. None whatsoever. It is what it is.

Day 6: Letter to a Stranger

Dear Stranger,
If I nod, it’s polite to nod back or say hello. I won’t judge you if you don’t judge me.
    Have a lovely day.

Sincerely,
Wilena

Day 5: Letter to my Dreams

Dear Dreams,
I see you, hear, you, and know that you are attainable. Like Pharrell says, “If you can believe it, then you can conceive it.”
Don’t worry Dreams, I’m coming. God strengthened speed and all!

Day 4: Letter to my Sibling

Dear Dorian,
I am proud of you. For a minute we were worried about you. We thought you’d never settle down and chill out. Thank God for the two A’s: Age and Axely. You have finally calmed down. We are a mixed-matched pair of siblings. You’re aggressive, I’m more passive-aggressive. You’re the oldest, and I’m the youngest. You’re a Lion, and I’m a Water Bearer (and astrologically, those signs are infect the exact opposites). You’re impatient and I have the patience of a saint. You’re more outgoing and charming, and I’m terribly shy. You’re good at talking while I opt to listen. You get my point. Together we had a very colorful childhood. Remember the nicknames they gave us when we were kids? Boo & Pepper, Axe & Smash, Boy & Nickel, The Devil & His Soul. Remember the times Ma would take us to play basketball and racquetball when it was just the three of us? Or all the trips to the library? I remember the story about the first time you saw me. When they brought me home from the hospital and put me in the crib, they said “Come here Dorian, look a your sister!” You looked into the crib and said “oooooh!” (in the same tone of voice one would say “I’m tellin’!” or “You’re in trouble!”). I also remember the story Ma told me of how I would throw my bottle down the stairs, and you’d run down to pick it up and bring it back to me. Then we’d repeat the process. I also remember the Christmas on South Street when I finally realized that Santa Claus wasn’t real, because it was the same Christmas you Duriel (and I think J.D) messed up my Baby Alive doll and made her pee green stuff. You always wanted video games & expensive shoes, and I only wanted everything Barbie. You were always concerned about your looks, and I never really cared. You had a ton of friends, and all of my friends went gaga over your looks. Everybody was tougher on you and sweeter on me (except for Ma & Dwayne of course). It seemed the natural way of things. We were Penny’s children, Dorian & Wilena. No one ever really forgets us.
We don’t see each other as much, which may or may not be a good thing. I know that it would make Ma a little happier if we were closer. And I should come to you more often for advice, or spend more time with you. I should basically embrace the benefits of having an older brother. But I choose not to interfere with your life. One, I don’t think I quite fit into it (which is fine), and also because I feel that it’s safer that way (which is also fine). There have been times when I’ve wanted to rip your head off because of your insensitive actions, and times when you would shock me with an act of kindness. I just hope that more people will be able to see the nicer side of you more often as we get older. You, like I, are growing and learning more about life with each passing year. But no matter what happens, you know I’m just a phone call away.

Love & Video Games,
Pepper/Smash/Nickel/Soul
or Wilena.

Day 3: Letter to my Parents

Dear Ma & Dwayne,
I don’t want the two of you to think that you have to apologize for anything. Dorian and I came out fine. Think about it; We aren’t in the Jailhouse, dopehouse, or (excuse my language) the whorehouse. We came out as stable, law-abiding citizens with a touch of wretchedness. We may act like we don’t have any sense, but you both know better. You were a pair of young people trying to raise two stubborn kids the best way you could. Guess what? You won!
You were the type of parents who liked to get out and GO! Dorian and I would be having a normal week, and the next thing we knew we’d be piled up in a car on the way garage sale hunting, the beach, or out of town. You splurged on us when you could afford to, and gave us quality. That’s how we ended up wanting the best, not the latest. But we weren’t spoiled (thank God!), because you made damn sure that never happened. One step out of line, and the privileges were snatched from us. You taught us that God came first at all times. You accepted our friends, but were quick to let us know which ones were trouble. You embraced and encouraged our open-mindedness, even when the results shocked you at times. You both gave sound advice and were good teachers. Nothing was ever sugar-coated for us. We were told what was up at all times. We never went hungry or homeless, and always had clothes on our backs and shoes on our feet. We’ve always been okay. Dorian and I knew, even then, that it was hard to do that. It’s my personal belief that we needed parents like y’all, strict but fun. Anyone else and we’d be lost. God paired us mixed-matched individuals together, and together we grew.  I thank and love God & y’all for everything.

Love,
Wilena!

P.s,
Remember when y’all used to take the stereo away from me and put it in your room? Yeah, when y’all left, I went in, stole it, and used it until y’all pulled up in the driveway. Yeah…sorry. lol!

Day 2: Letter to my Crush

Dear Crush,
At the moment you don’t exist, which is probably a good thing. I believe that you may show up sometime soon, but hopefully your appearance will bring about fruitful results. I’ll be 26 in a few weeks, and I’ve never been in an actual “relationship”. So for you to show up with empty promises would be a waste of time. Wishing for “something more’ is old.  It either happens or it doesn’t. You, dear Crush, just may be in the same category as Love, Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny. Childhood dreams.

Sincerely,
Wilena

Day 1: Letter to my Best Friend, Part Two

My Dearest Vampire, Werewolf & Ghost,
If you have to question who you are, slap yourself.
We are sisters, technicalities be damned. I’ve slept over too many times, ate at the same tables, and laughed too loudly with y'all for too long for the three of you not to know how I feel. I love y’all. I haven’t been around much, and I feel bad about that. But that doesn’t mean I don’t think about y’all every day. Know that I am proud of you. I’ve seen y’all suffer enough, I want the good things that you all deserve to come. I’ve been blessed with a set of cousins like none other, because words can’t really sum up the pure essence that is…y’all. So if you don’t know now you know.

Love,
Baleemba!

Day 1: Letter to my Best Friend, Part One

Dear Ma,
This is a letter coming from the non-daughter side. We have a great time together. Folks really don’t know just how funny you are, how much sense you make, how much fun you can be. I admire your style; simple and feminine. I feel  that our friendship is deeper and more unique than words can express. I can talk to you about anything and everything. Plus I know that you aren’t stuck in the past as far as your opinions, understanding and viewpoint. I love that you are open to new experiences, how you like to explore, discover. I love you for your strength. Your faith. I love how you unapologetically love the nicer things in life. I love how you strive for better; A better career, better lifestyle. I love how you set realistic goals. How you’ve never settled for the negative mentality that plagues most people, that “can’t” mentality. You want, then seek out ways to obtain and achieve. You do so with aggression, stubbornness and optimism that is admirable. You ignore rolling eyes and naysayers. You have the ability to make them feel like crumbs afterwards. You want what you want and do as you please. Only God can make you sit down somewhere. I simply cannot express how much I admire this about you, even when I grumble (which I have, many a time). There’s no point in envying or wishing because you're teaching me while doing this. I watch you more than you know. I see the lessons you’ve learned and take notes. I’ve been with you through countless highs & lows. We argue, laugh, cry, learn, and everything in between the in between. I love you Ma.

Love,
Pepper.
